Reception

All the receptionists may work at both sites.

Jane Bowers is reception manager based at Silverdale. Maria Doherty is senior receptionist based at Ryecroft. Jane and Maria are responsible for the smooth operation of reception, leading the reception team in delivering what we hope is a good service to our patients at all times.

The reception team are here to help you. They can advise you when the next available appointment is, whether you should see a doctor or a practice nurse, or whether there is an alternative to you attending the surgery eg advice from your local Pharmacist. Please don't hesitate to ask for help. In order that we can help you it may be necessary for us to ask for more information but please do remember that all our staff are bound by terms of the practice's Staff Code of Conduct in respect of confidentiality. The Department of Health require doctors' surgeries to report on the number of patients in doctors' surgeries who either smoke, do not smoke or have never smoked. We are also asked to collect information about patients' alcohol intake. On occasions you may be asked such questions by our reception staff.

Practice Nurses

Our practice nurses hold surgeries by appointment.

They have had extra training in areas such as family planning, taking smears and the management of diabetes and asthma.

They can attend to:

  • contraceptive advice
  • blood and urine tests
  • HRT and contraceptive pill checks
  • blood pressure checks
  • minor injuries
  • ear syringing
  • travel vaccinations
  • immunisations
  • diabetic annual checks
  • chronic heart disease and asthma checks

Our health care support worker will usually carry out your new registration check-up.

The receptionist can help you decide whether it would be better to see the doctor or nurse.

It is sometimes possible to see the nurse sooner than the doctor and may be more appropriate.

District Nurses

District nurses attached to the practice work closely with the doctors providing home nursing care. They have access to equipment to make nursing at home easier for patient and carer. Their phone number is on the useful numbers page.

Health Visitors

Three health visitors look after the health and development of children and also work with families, the elderly and disabled people. They run their own and vaccination clinics and are contactable through the surgeries. Their phone number is on the useful numbers page.

Community Midwives

Three midwives provide care and advice throughout pregnancy and postnatally. They run parentcraft classes and antenatal clinics at both surgeries on a Monday afternoon and are available in and out of hours for advice. Their phone number is on the useful numbers page.

Training Practice

The practice has been a training practice for GP registrars since 2003, successfully passing several quality assessments to achieve this. As we already provide training for medical students, midwives, health visitors, district and other community nurses, this development completes our training package range.

GP registrars are doctors in their last year before becoming GPs, having completed their hospital training. They can prescribe and see all conditions, always with the support of one of the full GP principals.

The medical students are more closely supervised and tend to see patients alongside one of the main doctors.

Occasionally, doctors need to be assessed through video and you may be asked if you would kindly participate. For more information visit North Staffs VTS at www.northstaffsvts.com
